Cowling: Why training ground is so important

U's chairman Robbie Cowling says failure to extend the hours the club can use its Tiptree training ground could scupper the hopes of potential professional footballers in Colchester.

Colchester Council planning officers are set to recommend Colchester United's application for extra hours be rejected.

Mr Cowling speaks out about the importance of the facility in an exclusive interview in tomorrow's Gazette.

Robbie Cowling knew exactly what conditions were put on this development before he built it.

Now, as he has done before, when he said jobs will be lost, he's using scare tactics in saying potential professional will suffer. They won't if they are good enough!

If the council refuse the planning then Robbie should stick pigs on the site. Let the stuck up knobs have a whiff of that. Ha ha .

A couple of cockerels wouldn't go a miss either.

He knew the conditions from the outset so should stop throwing his toys out of the pram now. No wonder he is so disliked by the vast majority of residents in Tiptree.

Still, he just needs to threaten to take the Council to court and they will back down and the conditions will be amended. If memory serves me right, that's how planning permission was granted in the first place.

This saga could get interesting when he starts building his housing estate and we get to see what's happening in terms of the finances and profits from the project.

Problem is, it is very difficult for a Col U fan to look at this in a neutral way - any perspective is clouded by emotional attachment to the club. So they will accuse Tiptree residents of nimbyism or worse.

It's a mess that could have been avoided.

Bert Simpson, Tesco's McDonalds and many other large organisations use these tactics all the time to get planning permission, so why should he be no different. I'm not a great fan of his because I still think one day he will stitch the club up when he wants to get out and move on.
