Cassie's Law - campaign goes on
8:00pm Tuesday 16th October 2012 in News By Wendy Brading
THE campaign for Cassie’s Law is continuing.
Earlier this week, Jackie McCord lobbied road safety minister Stephen Hammond asking him to change the law following the death of her daughter.
Colchester Sixth Form College student Cassie, 16, was mown down as she stood on the pavement in Head Street, Colchester.
The driver of the car, Colin Horsfall, 87, had been advised by police not to drive after an incident three days earlier.
Following Cassie’s death, Jackie called for police to be given the power to temporarily seize a driver’s licence if they felt they were unfit to drive. It would then be down to the DVLA to return or revoke it.
Jackie presented a petition of 45,000 signatures to Mr Hammond at the Department of Transport on Monday.
On Saturday, organisers of the petition, which is supported by the Gazette and its sister paper the Essex County Standard, will be collecting more names in Chelmsford.
