A CAMPAIGNING mother has lobbied the Government to change the law in the wake of her daughter’s death.

Student Cassie McCord, 16, died after being mown down by a car as she stood on the pavement in Head Street, Colchester.

Three days earlier, the driver Colin Horsfall, of Rowhedge, had been advised by police not to drive.

Cassie’s mother Jackie has called on the Government to implement Cassie’s Law, under which police have the powers to temporarily seize a driver’s licence where they consider them unfit to drive.

It would then be down to the DVLA to determine whether licence should be revoked or returned.

A campaign, supported by the Gazette and its sister paper the Essex County Standard, along with a Government epetition, collected a total of 45,000 signatures from across the country.

Jackie took the petition to the Department for Transport today and spoke directly to road safety minister Stephen Hammond.

I hope Jackie McCord got some positive feeback after all the hard work that she has put into her campaign and not just received lip service from the road safety minister.

I'm amazed there was only 45,000 signatures on this petition. This really is a no brainier and Jackie McCord is such a strong lady she deserves all our support.

Jackie I think what you have done is amazing. Yours loss is every parents worst nightmare. I still get so angry about what happened what an unnecessary waste of a young life. God bless Cassie rest in peace xxx
