St Mary's girls' artwork recognised at national awards

PUPILS scooped a top award in a national art competition.
Students Polly Banks and Zoe Jervis, both 13, from St Mary’s School, in Lexden Road, Colchester, took top spot in the secondary arts category of the National Arts and Minds competition, which promotes race equality and diversity in schools.
The Year Nine girls created Together as One, which is a collage of photographs of girls of different cultural backgrounds making up the face of one St Mary’s student.
At a gala awards ceremony in London on Tuesday, the pair took home a £40 Amazon voucher each and £350 for their school.
Alison Tew, who runs the school’s photography club, said: “A true cross-curricular issue, it brought together history, humanities, literacy, art and citizenship and helped our students to understand the importance of diversity in a society that is constantly changing, but in which each individual is valued.
“Polly and Zoe’s artwork expressed this very persuasively and we are all extremely proud of their achievement.”
