Coggeshall: Co-Op loses planning appeal

CO50804 - fleetshields A retailer's bid to build a village supermarket has been thrown out at appeal.

The East of England Co-operative Society appealed Braintree Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for a 5,000 sq ft shop in East Street, Coggeshall.

A planning inquiry was held in July.

Government-appointed inspector, Kay Sheffield, said the shop would not harm the retail vitality or viability of Coggeshall, living conditions of local residents or the character of the open countryside.

But she said this did not outweigh the harm to preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of the Coggeshall conservation area or the setting of nearby listed buildings.

Lucky for Coggeshall I doubt the store would have done much more trade than the existing store in the town shoppers are better off driving to Braintree or Tollgate than paying the inflated prices the Co op try to get away with.

Driving to Braintree or Tollgate... Won't that cost as much in petrol as you might possibly save in shopping locally?

How can "not in my back yard" be construed as racist?

NIMBY or Nimby is an acronym for the phrase "not in my back yard". The term (or the derivative Nimbyism) is used pejoratively to describe opposition by residents to a proposal for a new development close to them, developments that are generally needed in the society. Opposing residents themselves are sometimes called Nimbies.

Racist - a person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others

So why is turning a derelict industrial site into a useful amenity "useless"?

Racists are prejudiced against others because of their race (the clue is in the word). People can disageee with a development because it is close to their location, whatever their race - or come to that their sexual orientation. Calling these people NIMBY is no more racist than it is sexual discrimination.
