A FORMER soldier who pocketed money he was collecting for Help for Heroes has avoided a prison sentence.

Conman Robert Santangelo had been struck off by the charity but rail staff saw him with the collection tin on a train.

Santangelo, 41, of Cromwell Road, Colchester, was drinking at the time and was asked by railway enforcement officer Aragorn Davis if he had permission to collect. He was arrested at Thorpe train station.

Money should only be given to charities if it helps abused or vulnerable children or Cancer Research. Nothing else. None of this Help for heroes rubbish or Animal charities.

What a ridiculous comment. There are many worthy Charities out there that don't involve Children or Cancer.

What a daft comment!

There's plenty of other causes that equally need/deserve money to run successfully for a start. Secondly you seem to want to limit any fundraising for medical research to just cancer? What about the thousands of other illnesses people suffer from, some of them even worse than cancer, affecting people of all ages. Shouldn't these be able to raise money for funding too.

Personally I think even on a local level anything that is set up to help community or help others no matter the scale should have a right to charity status (which I believe is the case at the moment).

Besides, what right does anyone have to dictate what organisations I choose to give my money to?
