Wivenhoe fisherman set to fight quotas

A FISHERMAN says he is ready to fight fish quotas and is even ready to face punishment in court if he has to.

Wivenhoe fisherman Rodney Bowes, 52, has launched a fight to change the way trawlers are constrained by EU rules.

“There is an unfair system and I want to try to change that,” Bowes, of Claremont Road, said.

“I have decided more or less to take matters into my own hands.

“Unless we try to do something, then it will never change.”

He added: “Rightly or wrongly this is the way that I have chosen to do it.”

Bowes also said there is no planned action between fishermen in spite of other recent high profile anti-quota cases.

“Having said that, when the other guys knew that I had been charged, they asked me if I was just going to take my punishment lying down.

“Clearly, I’m not going to do that,” he added.
