UPDATED: One lane re-opened on Westway northbound after two accidents

Firefighters cut the roof of a Ford Ka after the driver was trapped by her injuries. Firefighters cut the roof of a Ford Ka after the driver was trapped by her injuries.

FIREFIGHTERS cut a woman free from her car following two crashes within 30 minutes on a busy commuter route.

Emergency services were first called to Westway at 7.30am after a blue BMW collided with a lamppost. No-one was hurt in the crash, but a repair team from Essex Highways was called to make the lamppost safe.

While traffic was building around the crash site another three vehicle collision happened around 50 metres further down the road at around 8am.

A woman was cut out of her black Ford Ka with suspected neck injuries by crews from Colchester fire station and attended by paramedics. She was conscious and breathing.

Two vans, a white Volkswagen Crafter and a blue VW campervan, were also involved in the crash. The drivers were not injured.

PC Alex Southgate, of the Stanway Road Policing Unit, said the road would be closed for a couple of hours while repairs are made to the lamppost and the cars are removed from the scene.

One lane has now been re-opened but traffic is still slow moving past the crash site.

Traffic initially trapped behind the crashes were directed by police back along the carriageway to the Balkerne Hill roundabout.

Rwd BMW and a notoriously slippery corner. I wonder if speed and skill play a part in this one vehicle accident? Similar to yesterdays 1 vehicle accident on the A12.

Hopefully everyone is ok including the rubbernecking related accident. Probably some sore prides though!!!

it must take a special type of driver to acheive that sober.

Everyone is quick to bash a motorcyclist when they have trouble but these fools are actually making everyone late for work.

RWD and rain or not its pretty poor driving

Why would you feel the need to comment in a negative way. I would ask you to think about what might have happended in this scenario, thankfully it wasn't as bad as it may potentially have been, however, what if it had? Surely you would all feel guilty moaning about sitting in traffic or being late for work by 20 minutes or so, how do you think the families of these people felt when informed of the incident. Think about what affect it could have had on those families hearing the worst. Would you and everyone else really maon about being late for work. I ask you to think harder next time.

Melissa, I don't know if your comment was aimed at me but if the circumstances were different my response would have been different.

I'm glad no one was hurt. It does appear poor driving caused both incidents however like I stated.
