Flu vaccine warning ahead of winter

HEALTH bosses have urged at risk groups to get a flu jab early.

People over 65 years of age, pregnant women and those with health conditions are being targeted in this years North Essex vaccination campaign.

Those with severe asthma, chest or heart complaints and diabetes are advised to book an appointment.

Dr Mike Gogarty, director of public health at NHS North Essex, said: “Flu is not just a cold, it can be a really serious illness for some people and it doesn’t just affect older people.

“The flu jab is completely safe, and it can’t give you flu.”

The vaccination is free and carers of the vulnerable are also urged to get protected.

The flu vaccine changes every year so even if you had a jab last winter you need another one this year to stay safe.

If untreated, the flu can lead to illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

The best time to be vaccinated is at the start of the flu season from October to November.
