Nearly 500 customers affected by town centre power cut

NEARLY 500 customers lost electricity this afternoon after a power cut in Colchester town centre.

UK Power Networks engineers worked to restore power to 492 affected customers in the Trinity Street, Sir Isaac's Walk and Culver Walk areas of the town centre after power was cut at 11.53am.

The majority of customers' power was restored by 12.28pm, with the remaining 102 re-connected by 12.57pm

A UK Power Networks spokeswoman said: "We do understand how inconvenient it is to be without power and apologise to the customers affected.

"Engineers are working as quickly as is safely possible in order to restore supplies to those without power."

It only lasted an hour. Hardly a story.

only an hour Boris ?,
while the hard pressed shop owners scramble to keep open.
Its not as if they shut the doors for a siesta is it.

Only an hour is longer than a mere minuet, but less than a day.

to you with your years accrued,
an hour might be enough to live longer,
or be that "magic" hour where you perish Boris.
never dismiss an hour in anyones life as nothing.

I didn't say it was nothing, I said it wasn't a story. If those shopkeepers couldn't sell stuff because their tills wouldn't work, or their chip-and-pin devices wouldn't work, they could still have used that hour of their lives productively. For example, give the staff time off to take a walk in the park, or hold a meditation session, or even dance the minuet.

very good Boris,
my schpelin is not so good,
but good enough to compose prose that you rely on,
eh :)
now meditation, yes, why not.
the whole retail quarter of Colchester going in a trance like state for an,
"hour"?

but wait with your wit,
most seem a bit "way out" there at times anyway.

the fish and chip shops without chip & pin can trade, but only if there cooking on gas,
but alas, I am no jolly fish frier,
so cannot remark.

so, that leaves walking in the park.
fabulous Idea Boris,
but, with Colchesters crime rates spiralling out of control, and no means of contacting sullied shop workers afraid to carry phones or cash,
it would result in a park full of sad/scary, nothing to do shop staff.
A walk in the park is not the best way to describe them I guess.

Loved the anchient dance Idea tho`,
older than you Boris old chum.

It affected a larger area than stated. The King George estate was also without any power for the same period. I should know - my wife phoned me at work to tell me she couldn't make a cup of tea! So it wasn't a non-news item, it was almost a disaster for my family! ;)

LOL...
I am an old boy scout from a previous life I think,
for I have a generator, fuelled, ready to go hiding in my "safe place"
I also have gas canister powered camping stoves,
along with numerous tents if it so became "that" bad.

but alas, my humble home has had new hi tech overhead power cabling last year, so we very Infrequently have the urgent need of gennie or brewing stove to use.

I mean, the thought of losing neighbours, home & away, or the Waltons on sky,
perish the thought,

eh...
:)

give my regards to the mrs setbuilder,
tell her "Jacks" do a nice gas canister powered stove for a quick brew if in need!

dib dib - dob dob eh.. :0

Ian, if you or setbuilder need anything from Jack's, I recommend you get in there soon. They are on the edge of going out of business, and once the restrictions on delivery vehicles come in, they are likely to pack up. A staff member there told me this a couple of days ago. I hope it's not true, but it just might be.
As for walking in Castle Park, it is as safe as walking in Jaywick or any other part of Clacton. There are no safe areas any more, as the people in Colchester's Poets Corner, where the lad from Clacton was murdered, now know.

Setbuilder, I recommend a gas stove, that way you can always boil a saucepan to make tea if your kettle packs up.

Thanks Boris.
be such a shame if Jacks went.
In my life, I have always had a Jacks type store to shop in for that "special" thing.
my 1st was at Chequers corner Dagenham, that went in road Improvements,
then another in Green Lanes, Dagenham,
could have been Jacks double.
Then came the time for my relocation, and after hearing tales from relocated family already here abouts, the tales of Jacks emporium, I began to enjoy my visits to Colchester if only to remember just what I "must have"
The mrs likes her buget shops trawling, while I stand and gaze through the many windows of dear old Jacks.
I wonder If It can continue, but from an out of town base via an Industrial unit, but do worldwide trade through the Internet, but still having a trade counter for loyal customers.
Must be worth thinking about surely?
