Hidden gem phone box re-discovered in village

A “HIDDEN gem” has been discovered after a mystery resident spruced up a phone box.

The classic red box in Dedham Road, Langham, had gone unnoticed for many years and had almost become an eyesore.

Several other K6 phone boxes installed to mark the silver jubilee of King George V in 1935 have been given grade-II listed status elsewhere in Essex.

Parish councillors had initially ruled out adopting or even buying the phone box for a £1, but while investigating further discovered Robert Gamble, who lives across the road from the phone box, had taken it upon himself to clear rubbish and plant flowers around it, making it an attractive sight.

Councillor Tony Ellis said: “It is great Robert has planted the flowers and cleared it out when fireworks were put in it.

“Knowing it is a K6 box installed for the silver jubilee it becomes another memorial in our village, and we as a council plan to write to Robert to thank him for his work.

“They have restored a hidden gem. These phone boxes have massive historical significance.

“I wonder if they will become ancient monuments, a bit like wartime pillar boxes. We may think they are a blight on the landscape but in 600 years time they might be like a medieval castle.

“We will now reconsider our decision not to adopt or buy the phone box.”

Great writing here. How could it have gone unnoticed for years and yet 'almost' become an eyesore?
Obviously the local councillors take so little notice of their wards that they failed to notice someone had cleaned it and planted flowers around it - but had to 'discover' the action. Nice to see them jumping on the bandwagon after someone else did their job for them...

"...a mystery resident spruced up a phone box."

It was Robert Gamble who lives across the road. Mystery solved.

It's tough to find a news angle about a phone box that has had a lick of paint and a few flowers planted next to it.

I think Will did a very good job. He is one of my favourite Gazette cub reporters.

Well done Will. One for your scrapbook.

When councillor Ellis referred to wartime pillar boxes, he probably meant pill boxes. Will Lodge and the sub-editor are probably too young to remember that that is what those defensive buildings were called.
A pity that the photo shows everybody else, but not Robert who did the work. Maybe he is too shy. Anyway, a nice story. Well done, Will Lodge and the Gazette.
.
By the way, the CBC website informs us that councillor Ellis is no longer a councillor. A new parish council was elected on 30th August and neither of the councillors in the picture was a candidate. So this story is a little out of date.
