We need improved lighting at Firstsite

A LEADING Colchester activitist has called for action after she was injured falling over blocks marking out a disabled bay.

Wendy Bailey, former chairman of community group Destination Colchester, suffers with arthritis in her hips, feet and knees and is registered disabled.

She had parked her car in the disabled bay at the Firstsite gallery.

But when she returned to it in the dark, she and a VIP guest fell after tripping over the blocks.

Now she has called on Colchester Council, which is responsible for the area around the gallery, to improve lighting before someone else is hurt.

Mrs Bailey was at Firstsite to see a talk by Charlotte Higgins, chief arts writer for the Guardian.

The PR consultant, who has difficulty walking, offered Ms Higgins a lift to the station.

She said: “It was dark in the disabled car park as there is no lighting.

“I opened the car remotely as we left Firstsite and Charlotte made her way in front of the car to the passenger door.

“Before I could open the driver’s door, I saw Charlotte disappear from view and cry out.

“I couldn’t understand what had happened. I put my things down on the bonnet of the car and went to help her.

“The next thing I knew something had tripped me up and we were both face down on the ground.

“It was pitch black and no one could see us.”

Mrs Bailey called out and was helped up by Bill Hayton, chairman of Destination Colchester.

She added: “Charlotte and I had tripped over the blocks which, ironically, mark out the disabled bay.

“The blocks are the same colour as the ground – rendering them invisible – especially with no lighting to help.”

Both women suffered cuts, grazes and bruises from their falls.

Mrs Bailey said: “I love Firstsite – I think it is a fantastic venue.

“But I think the council must improve the lighting to make sure this does not happen to anyone else.

“The lighting there is subtle and, I suppose, ambient, but it is not effective.

“I am angry no one is taking responsibility and no one cares.”

Colchester Council said it was investigating the matter and could make no further comment.

We need improved lighting at Firstsite?

We need lighting along Boxted Road so the council doesn't close the road on match days and restrict residents access to their homes. Gone on for 4 years now but I bet this council will find the money for Firstshite before looking after residents!

We need "LIGHTING" along Boxted Road so the council doesn't close the road on match days and restrict residents access to their homes. Gone on for 4 years now but I bet this council will find the money for Firstshite before looking after residents and football supporters!

Surely as CBC don't own the site it's up to the First Site people to install adequate lighting.

Or perhaps move the trip hazard blocks and use white paint like the rest of the world?

Since Mrs Bailey is such a fan of Firstsite and obviously a regular visitor she must have known about the lighting already. Why did she not have a torch with her!
