AN estimated 10,000 spectators lined the streets of Colchester town centre to watch Dean Downing win the fourth stage of the Tour Series.
Fifty professional cyclists raced along a 1.6km route starting in the High Street, heading down Head Street, along St John’s Street and Osborne Street, up Queen’s Street and back to the finish line at the bottom of the High Street.
The race started at 7.10pm - ten minutes late - but the delay didn't dampen the crowds' enthusiasm.
Spectators banged on hoardings and cheered loudly when the cylists raced past at high-speed.
Dean Downing from team Rapha Condor Sharp won the race and was presented his winners medal by man dressed as a Roman centurion.
His team, who were top of the leaderboard going in the Colchester stage, also came first overall.
About 5,000 children had earlier enjoyed free events in Colchester's Castle Park.
Disappointingly, traders reporters takings were down.
