Former pirate station Radio Caroline has left her home at the end of Southend Pier.

The radio station, which transmits from the Ross Revenge ship, has been moored at the pier for around a month.

But now broadcasters have had to say goodbye to the town to make way for SS Sedov, the world's largest tall ship, which is making an appearance at the Southend Water Festival this weekend.

The Ross Revenge was supposed to weigh anchor on Tuesday evening but was delayed due to problems with the tug boat and dredging works.

Sarah Miles, a DJ for the station, said: "SS Sedov has a larger hull than us and so we have to move and make way for her.

"We were supposed to move earlier but there have been all the usual delays involved with getting ready to go and finally being able to leave."

But she assured Radio Caroline's loyal fans the ship would be back at her old birth at the pier in early September.

The Ross Revenge is moving up the Thames Estuary and will moor near Leigh until she can return to Southend.

The radio will not be broadcasting while the ship is stationed in Leigh.
