A quarter-final of the B.D.R. Roger Burton Trophy saw the Central Essex players in majestic form against Elm Park B.C.

On an unfamiliar rink, Brian Barnes played as though he had a train to catch, and scarcely allowing his opponent a glimpse of the kitty, he raced though his singles game to win 21-4.

The other Bunton event at Elm Park on the same evening was the Triples and here Central Essex's trio of Bob Petchey, and Les Field with Cyril Robinson skipping, registered a 15-11 win.

The double on C.E's opponents green, backed by a healthy aggregate shots advantage, meant that only reverses at home of mega size could close the gap and when Central Essex's Rinks quartet of Mike Wilkes, Reg Dart, Tony Baker and ship Henry Layer went down 14-22 there was hardly a palpitation.

In the Pairs Len Wallis and John Ereira probably had not even considered defeat.

Steadily wearing down the opposition they built up a comfortable buffer and came home in style 21-14, presenting an overall winning margin of 23 shots and a guaranteed semi-final place against Liberty B.C.

Setting the tone of this four triples B.D.L. match at Ongar. Len Wallis, supported by Brian Barnes and John Ereira, romped away, 26-8.

Len Kirby, Len Palmer and skip Tony Baker had ten shots in hand (22-12) at the close of their game and Cyril Robinson steered Bob Petchey and Les Field to an easy landing with 20-14.

As Ron Jolly, David Palmer and skip Henry Layer prefer the thrill of a close game they were content to win 19-18 and collect maximum points for the club.

An R.B.A match at home to Harold Hill found Central Essex rampant on two of the three rinks.

John Ereira, David Palmer and skip Len Wallis ran up 35-11 but to Henry Layer and his team of Ron Finch, Reg Dart and Tony Baker, that seemed by comparison a close run thing for they won 40-4, the highest score of any match Henry has played in during 12 years of bowling.

All this put Cyril Robinson, with Mike Wilkes, Bob Petchey and Les Field rather in the shade but as usual they came up trumps scoring 19-17.

Skipping for the first time, Len Palmer, supported by Brian Beard and Cliff Welham, ran up a cracking score of 29-3 in their triples during a friendly against Gidea Park.

It swung the game as over four rinks, Central Essex won 69-65.

In another four rink triples, this time a friendly with Marconi Fellowship at Chelmsford, Welham gave his backing to Dave Palmer and Harry Williams when they scored 28-5.

Fred Dowsett led John Everett and Frank Kemp to a win of 17-12, and an overall result of 67-56.

In a mixed three rink trebles at North Weald Dave Palmer, with Doris Brown and Jim Ingram won 21-9.

Also winners were George Green (skip), Ron Finch and Brenda Colson to the tune of 27-14, and an overall 60-39 win.
