A busy weekend for Chelmsford Athletics Club began on Saturday when the women and under 15 girls team travelled to Guildford for their penultimate match of the Southern Women's League Division Three.

As at Kingston, four weeks earlier, Chelmsford were up against teams placed higher in the League than themselves including local rivals, Colchester Harriers and Ilford Athletics Club.

Ilford, with a good chance of promotion won the meeting with 197 points.

However, another good round performance from Chelmsford's small band of mostly regular performers saw them gain second place with 172.2 vital points to take the team a little bit further away from the relegation zone.

Cornwall Athletics Club were third with 164, Aldershot were fourth with 151 and Colchester Harriers fifth with 127.5 points.

The day's most encouraging results came from the club's five senior women throwers who only dropped three points between them.

Maximum points came from the javelin with Kim Florey winning the 'A' string and Ann Jones the 'B' string.

Another new corner attracted to the club since the opening of the new track was Emma Elkwood who on her Club debut won the hammer with a throw of 35.78m.

Shirley Quinn won the 'B' string and came second in the Discus with Laura Ketley winning the 'B' string and came second in the shot.

Catriaona Slater won both the 100m and 200m races and in the 'B' string and Chloe Searl was third and second respectively.

Jenny Marie won the 400m Hurdles and competed in six events including the 4x400m relay.

Another athlete doing more than her fair share of the work was Tracy Minton, who once again gave everything and competed in the 800m, 1500m and the 3000m.

Laura Winter competed in the 400m, 1500m and the 4x400m relay while Jenny Hudson gained valuable points in the 80m Hurdles, Long Jump and Triple Jump.

The under 15 girls were represented by seven athletes, two of them having moved up an age group for the day to complete the team.

Louise Hagger gained valuable points competing in the shot and discus throwing weights that were heavier than she is used to.

Sarah Jarvis gained experience in racing in the older age group and came third in the 'B' string of the 1500m.

Danielle Tatum was fourth in the 'A' string. In the 800m Hollie Smith won and Anna Wilson was fourth in the 'B' string, she also competed in the javelin and shot.

Lottie Robinson won the 80m hurdles and was second in the high jump while Lucy Taylor was third in the 100m and 200m races.

The final match in the League will be at Rochester on Saturday, September 4 when another similar performance will see the club avoid relegation.
