Could highly-rated Aldershot Town star Joe Nartey be the answer to Billericay Town boss Gary Calder's striking problems?

That is the question on the lips of the New Lodge club's followers after news that the man who made himself a favourite with Town fans last season by scoring four goals in a three-match loan spell has been made available for transfer by Shots.

Nartey did not figure in the early season Aldershot starting line-ups, but did play last weekend, when Shots went down 1-0 at home to Billericay in their only defeat so far in the Ryman League Premier Division.

Calder badly needs new striking talent. Former Welwyn man Stafford Browne, who had talks with Conference side Welling this week, has yet to commit himself to New Lodge long term - although there are strong hopes he eventually will do so.

Canvey favourite Alan Brett, who scored both goals in the 2-1 home win over Chesham in midweek, is only with Billericay as a short-term measure with work commitments making it impossible for him to be more permanently involved.

The scenario looks perfect for Billericay to make a move for Nartey, but it is certain that they would have to pay a fee of several thousand pounds to obtain his services. Also, competition is likely to be strong for a player who has a proven track record for scoring.

At this stage there is nothing to suggest an official Billericay move for Nartey, but the club must be aware that splashing out on him would be a marvellous crowd booster and greatly increase their hopes of being strong candidates in the push for major honours this term.

More immediately, Billericay, fifth in the table with three wins from four games, face a hectic weekend in which two former New Lodge favourites will be doing their best to plot Town's downfall.

On Saturday at home to Boreham Wood, Billericay will need to beat a goalkeeper who enjoyed a tremendous few years at New Lodge before becoming surplus to requirements in the summer . . . Dave Root.

In Monday's visit to Slough (3pm) striker David Adekola, who joined the team managed by ex-Spurs and England star Graham Roberts this week, will be out to gun down his old Billericay colleagues.

Billericay boss Calder is hopeful that Sammy Cooper and Billy Goldstone will pass late fitness tests and be available for Saturday's encounter.

Billericay Supporters Club will be running a coach to Slough on Monday. The cost is £6 adults, £5 concessions and £2 for Town juniors (under-12s). Bookings can be made with Neil Wiltshire on 0585 145848 or 01245 323670.
