Dean Macey's World Championships decathlon silver medal could make him a millionaire within a year and will certainly help keep him in the sport.

That was the financial windfall forecast when Asics, the sports equipment company, announced they have a verbal agreement to sign Canvey athlete Macey, who finished runner-up to world record holder Tomas Dvorak.

The Czech is already an Asics athlete and Macey looks set to join him and British stars Jonathan Edwards, Steve Backley, Steve Smith and Iwan Thomas.

Macey, 21, refused to believe the figure quoted and revealed that he had thought about quitting the sport before the championships.

"Yes I considered it. At one stage I couldn't see any light at the end of the tunnel," said Macey.

"This year was make or break as I would have run out of funds. It's worrying when you can't afford petrol.

"Now I will be able to focus on athletics 110 per cent," he added. "I've got some big bills to pay and now I will get increased lottery support that will also come in handy."

Macey is now due to receive a hero's welcome when he returns home on Monday.
