The Three Rivers Golf Club Ladies Section competed for the August Medal and keen competition resulted in a win for Elaine Atkin in the first Division with a nett score of 68. Linda Crisp was runner-up with a nett 71.

Shirley Dover won division two with a nett score of 80 and Ann Fiford (nett 81) was sercond.

The Friendship Cup - a mixed fourball Betterball competition - was played against Ballards Gore on Wednesday in attrocious weather conditions but there were a number of fine returns.

The match was played in an excellent spirit and Three Rivers were eventual winners with a team total of 483 points.

The individual prizes went to: Joe and George Hughes (43 points), Ria and John Haughey (42 points) and Elaine and Maurice Atkin (41 points).

On Friday, Three Rivers Ladies hosted the Three Club Challenge Shield comprising nine players from each club Three Rivers/Belfairs/Ballards Gore.

The competition resulted in a win for the host team with 247 points.

Ian Sinclair, the Channels Golf Club Professional, supported the Club's annual day.

The results were: Ladies Professionals Day (18 Holes Stableford): Sandra Bramley 36 points, Pam Pamphilon 35 points, Fran Thomas 34 points and Marion Ballard 33 points. Front 9: Ivy O'Brien 16 points; Back 9: Lis Gander 18 points. Mens Professionals Day (18 hole strokeplay): Eddie Garty 86/19/67; Ted Hawkins 76/6/68; Andy Francis 78/9/69; David Perry 84/15/69.

The Ladies v Gents annual competition for the coveted 'Potty' was played on Saturday.

Captain Chris Simmons led the Gentlemen to an 8.5-4.5 win over Lis Gander's Ladies team.

Channels' final scratch league fixture, against Forrester Park, resulted in a 5-0 win for Channels and the win gave Channels overall victory in Division Two of the county event.

The team representing Channels was Simon Everitt, Dick Seabright, Paul Bramley, Julian Leader and Rick Smith.

The Chelmsford Golf Club Ladies Silver team were entertained by Rochford Hundred Golf Club for their semi-final of the Essex County Ladies Golf Union's Inter-Club competition against Chigwell.

Unfortunately for Chigwell, they were missing some of their regular team and on the day, one player was caught in traffic at Kelvedon which forced them to make a hurried replacement at the start of the match.

Chelmsford, a strong side at any time, took the first four matches and with Chelmsford level or better in the remaining games, the result was never in doubt and the Captains called the match 'over' after the first four results.

The second semi-final, at Chelmsford, saw Hainault go forward to the final with a 5-2 win over Rochford Hundred.

Chelmsford were led by Ladies Captain Eileen Croker and the team was Trish Wilson, Pat Garner, Jean Johnson, Alison Evans, Amanda Colgate, Ann Simpson and Joyce Allison.

The Mens Scratch League team, under their Captain, M. J. Crumpen, were hosts to Colchester in the Central League.

The game was well balanced and each match could have gone either way with the last putt on the 18th being the decider in two of the matches.

Chelmsford however came away at the end with a 4-1 win.

The Chelmsford team was Keith Davies, David Knights, Richard Wallace, Sean Dolton and David Southgate.

The Ladies played their August Medal and it was noticeable that more scores are beginning to appear below par, indicating that their new handicapping system is beginning to level out.

The winner with a nett 65 was Joanna Philpot, followed by nett 69 Elspeth Brewer (nett 69), Diane Kendrick (nett 70) and Rita Catun (nett70) on countback from Norma Tattersal, Mary Crook and Frances Holloway.

The men played their Chalk Cup competition, which was inaugurated in 1961 by G. Chalk as a 36 hole foursomes event.

This year's winners were Freddie and Peter Trott with a 36 hole score of 139, followed by Lloyd Kennedy and Gerry Valentine (143), and Paul Connell and Bernard Mitchell (144), on countback from David Forbes and Paul Adam.

In the mens August Medal, the winner with a nett 64 was Dudley Smith followed by Lindsay Edmonds (nett 66), on countback from John Baker, Duncan Gray and Ian Henry.
