Highly-controversial plans to build a new annexe at the historic All Saints' Church in Maldon High Street are nearly ready to be submitted.

Maldon District Council should receive the application for the £300,000 building during the next fortnight.

The development will be important for the life and growth of both the town and church, according to Canon David Atkins.

He said: "We are literally putting everything into the application. We have been handling things as they happen but I have no doubt there will be an awful lot of direction once the decision time comes. We are just waiting for the architect to come back to us."

Church activities had been based on two different sites for 40 years.

One of these sites was at the church itself at the top of High Street and the other was at the former Church Hall in London Road, which was sold off last year.

Five possible sites for the annexe were discussed with the best location decided as being at the south-east corner of the churchyard, as few memorials would be disturbed.

The proposal has been backed by the parochial church council and Maldon town councillors but many residents have voiced concerns over the changes to the important building. Its construction will be financed by the recent sale of the former church hall in London Road.
