A Brentwood church and school are already on the starting blocks for the Olympic Games by hosting their own themed event.

The South Weald Festival 2004 has been given an Olympic flavour and promises to be a record-breaking weekend.

The festival is one of the biggest such events in the annual community calendar and organisers are hoping local businesses will get involved.

The money raised is shared by St Peter's School in Wigley Bush Lane and St Peter's Church in Weald Road.

Last year the festival attracted 3,500 visitors and raised more than £13,000.

Organisers want to break fundraising records to help the school replace its old demountable classrooms and support a £200,000 church appeal.

The Mayor of Brentwood Cllr Shirley Howe is to attend a festival pre-launch and plant sale at St Peter's School this Friday from 2pm.

The festival itself kicks off on Friday, June 25 with a school Olympics at 1.30pm.
