Colchester United boss Phil Parkinson has completed the signing of former Reading team-mate Kevin Watson less than a fortnight after denying a deal was on the cards.

The experienced midfielder was released by the Royals at the end of last season and, despite being tracked by clubs in Nationwide League Division One, decided to put pen to paper on a transfer at Layer Road.

The Evening Gazette revealed on May 20 that Parky wanted to sign Watson, only to be told by the U's manager: "It's not true.

"I want to get the players here at Colchester signed-up before I start to look elsewhere."

Player-of-the-Year Alan White, supporters' away Player-of-the-Year Simon Brown and Andy Myers are yet to agree new contracts with the club.

However, speaking after the Watson deal had been finalised, delighted Parky said: "It's not often when you're looking for players that you get your number one target.

"Kevin is someone I've wanted for a long time and he'll be a very good player for this club."
