A group which has organised events and care for the disabled in Braintree for nearly 50 years has folded because of lack of members.

The Physically Handicapped Club of Braintree, set up in 1957, held its final meeting last week at Jubilee Hall, The Avenue, Braintree, after the organisers decided the club should fold.

The registered charity funded at least two outings a year and activities through lottery grants and charity events.

Club secretary Ruth Haigh explained the group could not run as a result of the age of members, a lack of new members joining and no voulunteers on the committee to organise events.

Mrs Haigh, 78, who has been at the club for the past eight years, said: "We couldn't get a chairman or vice chairman and that was it. We had to fold, we didn't have the members or the committee to run the club."
