An 84-year-old Benfleet woman has had a lucky escape after the car she was driving came into collision with another carrying four pensioners.

The smash, which closed the Southend-bound sliproad of the A127 at Upminster at about noon on Saturday, saw the woman's Rover collide with a Daewoo being driven by a 77-year-old man.

The woman was rushed to Romford's Oldchurch Hospital for treatment to leg and chest injuries.

It was a woman in the Rover who had the luckiest escape, however, when her heart stopped beating at the hospital.

The 76-year-old from the Romford area had suffered chest injuries in the crash and needed to be resuscitated by doctors at Oldchurch.

Her three companions, a 73-year-old woman, a 77-year-old woman and 77-year-old man, were also taken to the hospital for treatment to leg injuries.
