Southend United manager Steve Tilson was hopeful today of signing a new striker to bolster his shot-shy Shrimpers squad.

The former Blues midfielder is determined to recruit another front-runner and had already opened talks with a goal-getting hit man.

"I've spoken to a striker," confirmed Tilson. "I'm sure he would get a lot of goals for us if he signed but I'm not getting carried away with things.

"There are other clubs after him as well and we will just have to wait and see what happens."

Tilson refused to reveal the identity of his latest transfer target after former Colchester United man Scott McGleish slipped through the net.

The Blues had talks with the striker but then Northampton Town came in with a better offer to sign McGleish.

"I'm reluctant to let anyone know who he is but if he doesn't sign then we'll move on again," added Tilson.

"We're not rushing into things, there's plenty of time until the start of next season and there are loads and loads of players available right now."
