Essex Eels have been shocked by the news that one of their players suffered a suspected broken neck during Saturday's 68-12 home defeat to Sheffield Hillsborough.
Adam Butterworth, who is also the club's press officer, was taken to Basildon hospital after he was hurt in a tackle during the match at Basildon rugbyclub.
Head coach Stuart Hogg said: "He suffered nerve damage and although he can still move there is a danger that it could affect his breathing.
"The doctors decided they couldn't move him to Romford so he is still in Basildon hospital, where he's waiting for further scans." The results of those scans are expected later today.
Butterworth, 20, from South Woodham Ferrers, plays as a utility forward for the Eels.
