Graham Gooch is confident Essex will collect their first Championship win of the season when they take on Yorkshire in a scheduled four-day duel starting at Chelmsford tomorrow.

The head coach believes his side can build upon their emphatic Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy triumph against Notts at Trent Bridge, which he hailed "our most satisfying performance of the summer so far".

"That has given everyone a big lift and I think the lads can kick on from here in both the Championship and National League," he said.

"We've come close to winning the last couple of Championship games and there is certainly no shortage of confidence in the side."

Essex will be on a revenge mission against Yorkshire having lost by seven wickets when the sides met in the opening fixture at Headingley. Since then Essex have drawn five successive matches but have had the satisfaction of gathering maximum bonus points from the last three.

Darren Gough, rested at Taunton last week, and legspinner Danish Kaneria - ruled out by a sore spinning finger - are available again, while skipper Ronnie Irani is expected to declare himself fit for his first Championship outing of the campaign.
