The students dressed in Egyptian dancing costumes for the ceremony at Southend Adult Community College in Ambleside Drive. College principal Jill Warnes said: "The college supports community projects that make a positive difference to local lives.

"I understand 40,000 women are newly diagnosed with breast cancer each year in the UK and fundraising helps ensure they can access help and advice quickly."

Since opening in 1976, more than 53,000 women have used the unit, which offers mammograms, family history advice and screening, consultations with specially trained nurses and a telephone helpline.

The Egyptian dancing classes have proved popular with students from 20 to 70 and welcome people with mobility problems. Call 01702 445710 for more information. Classes start in September.
