A £10,000 bid to stamp out drinking in Leigh's streets is under consideration by the town's council.
Leigh town councillors have been campaigning for the move ever since Southend High Street and Hamlet Court Road imposed the ban in 2002.
Their requests have so far been refused by Southend Council, which will make the final decision. Geoff Fulford, Leigh town clerk, said: "We asked for Leigh to be included in the scheme when it originally came into force, but the answer from Southend Council then was no.
"We were told we would have to wait for the results of the current scheme to be monitored by Southend Council before any decision would be made to extend it.
"We still haven't been made aware of the results of any monitoring, but members of the town council are now being asked if they want to pursue the matter again."
