Ice warning across north Essex

MOTORISTS are urged to drive with caution in north Essex.

Police are warning drivers to be careful this morning because of a large amount of black ice on the roads.

Braintree, Halstead, Colchester, Dunmow and Stansted seem to be the areas with the most incidents and accidents.

Both the Highways Agency and Essex County Council have sent out gritters to try and keep the county moving.

"Both the Highways Agency and Essex County Council have sent out gritters to try and keep the county moving". If they had sent them ourt in advance most of these accidents would have been avoided. The idea that prevention is better than cure is clearly lost with ECC - unless you live in Chelmsford, of course.

It would be interesting to know what the roads in and around Chelmsford are like. Has anyone on here any first hand knowledge?

No first hand info but I'll bet in West Hanningfield that Helmons Lane and thesurrounding roads are well gritted.

Walking from the town centre in Braintree to Clare Road you take your life in your hands, I haven't seen any grit or gritters around there at all. When you have to walk in the road cause the pavement is to dangerous it's madness.

Does anyone realise that gritter lorry drivers have to (a) also get to work, despite icy conditions, and (b) if people abandon cars and cause jams, the gritters won't get through? I won't mention (c) the fact that prioritising has to be the name of the game, and while it's not nice to be slipping around on a B road, it's probably because the main arteries are being seen to first. Of course (d) this means that pavements are not a priority, when death and injury due to ice has to be prevented on the roads, and (e) did ANYONE take note of the weather warning, a full week before, that stated: 'Stay at home unless absolutely necessary, because, believe it or not, the roads are going to be snowed upon'? (see (b). Nah, of course not.
