A group of north Essex birdwatchers have found another purpose for their hobby: fundraising for the county’s brain injuries charity.
Glyn Evans, his partner Debbie Taylor and their friends hope to record as many as 100 species in just one day as an unsual way of attracting sponsorship for Headway Essex.
The couple - along with Alec Selley, their neighbour in Wivenhoe, and Nick Green from Chelmsford - will be setting out before dawn on Sunday April 19, and cover, on foot, an area stretching from Essex University to Brightlingsea.
“We will take in freshwater marsh, gravel pits, woodland, farmland and estuarine habitat, as well as a few gardens on our way,” said Mr Evans.
“Raising money for Headway gives us an extra incentive to do well, and to prove how exciting it is to discover such a wealth of wildlife on your doorstep.
“I will provide a full report on the Just Giving page of all we saw, and how we went about finding it,” he added.
Mary Beverley, the charity’s fundraising officer, said: “We are delighted that Glyn and his friends are undertaking this challenge for Headway, the only local charity caring for the survivors of brain injury and their families.
“We hope lots of people will support them with their fantastic fundraising feat, and we wish them good luck with the challenge.”
