A HOME within a converted former psychiatric hospital in Colchester has been put on the market.
The unique home inside one of the original buildings at the former Severalls Mental Health Hospital site is up for sale for £700,000.
The semi-detached home in Echelon Walk in Colchester has been decorated in a modern style, giving the building a new lease of life.
The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is an Edwardian conversion which still contains period features, including high ceilings and sash windows.
Pictures of the home show the unique building, which was once a psychiatric hospital managed by the North Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust, before it closed in 1997.
It is now surrounded by newly built homes from a number of developers.
Inside, there is a wide staircase which twists around in a circle, with lots of steps due to the high ceilings on both floors.
The downstairs flooring is mostly concrete with some areas of carpet and upstairs is carpeted.
The three smaller bedrooms are almost equal in dimensions with a wide hall running alongside them.
A good-sized family bathroom with a large shower and a separate bath sits in between the bedrooms.
The hospital was built in 1910, designed by architect Frank Whitmore and officially opened in May 1913.
Developers Bellway, Taylor Wimpey and Bloor Homes started works on the development of the site in 2017 and it is now surrounded by 730 new homes.
Now, the Kingswood Heath housing development, in Mile End, is home to thousands of residents.
In the description for the home, a spokesman for estate agents Gyles and Rose said: “An exceptional and distinctive opportunity awaits to secure the largest and most magnificent residence in this one-of-a-kind Edwardian hospital conversion, boasting expansive accommodation spanning over 3,500 square feet across two levels.
“This outstanding home provides an abundance of space for contemporary living, highlighted by a remarkable open-plan kitchen/dining/family area reaching nearly 50ft and an additional 32ft by 22ft living room.
“Comprising four exceptional bedrooms with two en-suites, and a luxurious bathroom, this property epitomises grandeur and style.
“The impressive facade of this period property is unparalleled.”
