A SILVER band conductor has been awarded in recognition of their services to the community.

Victoria Steinitz is the conductor of the Boxted Methodist Silver Band which celebrated its 125th anniversary this year.

Victoria was presented with the Essex High Sherriff's' Award after a rousing concert of Christmas music and carols at the Boxted village hall.

Charles Bishop, Essex High Sherriff, gave Victoria her award to honour her great and valuable services to the community, with the band she conducts being open to both church, and non-church-goers.

Liz Petter, Band Secretary, said how the award represents the community involvement Victoria has made as part of the band which as well as playing visits supermarkets and businesses across Essex.

Liz added: "She is a very busy woman".

Liz also explained how the Boxted band was the only remaining Methodist Silver band in the country, though there were a few other Methodist brass bands, and said: "There used to be Methodist band in every church but we are now the only serving Silver Band."

The band rehearses weekly at 7.30pm on Wednesdays at Boxted School and will be going to Brightlingsea this Saturday for a Christmas Tree event.

"It’s a very busy season to say the least,” she said.
