A COLCHESTER post office has announced it will be closing its doors.

West Mersea's High Street post office willl close on Friday, June 9.

The shop is shutting to make way for a new post office which will open on Mersea Island later in June.

The current post office is operated by a temporary postmaster, but the new location will provide permanent services to the community.

The new branch, within Mersea Island Supermarket, High Street, will open at 1pm on Wednesday, June 14.

It will be a new-style branch with a serving point alongside the retail counter.

It will be open between 9am and 6pm on weekdays and between 9am and 12.30pm on Saturdays.

The opening hours mean West Mersea residents will have access to an additional 18.5 hours of service a week when compared to the current branch.

Alison Wallace, who is the Post Office’s network provision manager, said: “We are delighted that we will soon have a permanent, full-time Post Office at this new location offering longer hours than currently and safeguarding service for the community.”

The post offices in Shrub End Road, Colchester, and High Street, Nayland, remain at risk of closure after failing to find a replacement sub-postmaster following changes designed to modernise the business.
