A COLCHESTER care worker was left “feeling helpless” after her bike was stolen from the front of one of her patient’s homes before a chance encounter saw it returned.

Heidi Mcshera, of Colchester, has been an in-house carer for two years.

Her company gave her an electric bike to commute to each patient’s house.

But Heidi has been left devastated after the bike was stolen from a patient’s front garden while she was on call.

She visits one of her elderly patients a number of times a day, with her other patients living within walking distance in Wivenhoe.

Heidi had left her beloved Carrera Crossfire Hybrid Bike, worth £1,500, at the patient’s side door, believing it would be safe.

But when she returned two hours later after visiting her other clients, she found the bike had vanished.

Due to the fast nature of the job, she often has to fit patients in back-to-back, leaving little time for a break or to lock the bike away.

Heidi said: “I believe someone has seen me come and go, to take the bike.

“It could’ve been an opportunist, but you really would have to be quite brave to go down there.

“No one would really venture down there, it is a cottage tucked away at the end of a very long drive, with plenty of bushes covering the home.

“I just feel so helpless."

Heidi and her husband searched around Wivenhoe to find the bike but had no luck.

She added: “The bike is so crucial for my job, I can’t walk from Colchester to Wivenhoe to visit my patients, and my partner can’t always give me a lift.

“This has made everything so difficult, and I am very disappointed. It is hard to put into words, really.

“I hope that people are wary of where they leave things, if this highlights people not to leave things unattended, then at least I may have helped someone else.”

Heidi was delighted to receive an unexpected call from her mother yesterday morning saying she had found the bike.

Her mum had popped into Tesco Express on the High Street to quickly purchase some items, leaving the shop, she was shocked to have come face-to-face with Heidi’s bike.

Heidi said: “I still can’t believe it. I feel over the moon, my manager is over the moon.

“I could never have dreamed my mum would have found it… It is nice to have a bit of luck for once. Thank god my mother was around at the right time.”
