BUS drivers are holding a football tournament to raise money for the family of an injured colleague.

Michael Birch, 44, of Greenstead, Colchester, was badly hurt when his bus was crushed by a steam engine which fell off a lorry, on Mersea last month.

He is still in hospital, but is no longer in the critical care ward in the London hospital where he is being treated.

Workmate Matt Wilson has organised a five-a-side competition at Colchester Leisure World to help Mr Birch’s family.

He is inviting football clubs, businesses and organisations and Mr Birch’s friends to sign up for the five-a-side competition at the Cowdray Avenue sports centre, on Sunday, October 18.

It runs from 9.30am to 12.30pm, with the first matches kicking off  at 10am.

Mr Wilson said: “I’ve known Michael for about 15 years.

“He’s an all-round lovely bloke, with a heart of gold. He’s always smiling.

“He’s been such a good mate and if I needed to know anything he’d always help.

“He’s getting better, but I felt I wanted to give something back, and show him his friends will always be there.”

Other First Essex workmates and former colleagues have also been busy raising money for Mr Birch’s family.

Steve Hartman, the company’s Colchester-based operations manager, said: “After recent conversations with Michael’s wife, Gemma, we can confirm he is showing positive signs of recovery and has been taken off the critical ward at the Royal London Hospital.

“This is excellent news we have been able to share with all his colleagues and they wish him well in his recovery.

“Michael sustained many serious injuries in the accident, which has made for a very worrying time for him and his family.

“We have provided full support for Gemma and her family while she manages family commitments and travels to and from hospital.

“It is also pleasing to see Michael’s colleagues rallying around, organising functions and events to provide additional support for him and his family.”

Entering a team in the five-a-side tournament, costs £15. to do so, to offer a raffle prize or help with refereeing call Mr Wilson on 07966 275993.
