A PENSIONER has slammed the hit-and-run driver who knocked her off her bike and left her in the road.

Linda Roberts, 68, of Bures Road, West Bergholt, had gone for a ride with her husband Peter, when she found herself lying in the middle of the road after the car sped off.

She was left with severe bruising to her chest, cheek, eye and hands and her £1,500 bike had a buckled wheel.

She said: “We had been on the most fantastic ride to East Mersea, got the ferry to Brightlingsea and then cycled home.

“We were almost back and riding along Colchester Road.

“Then all I heard was a car speeding away and I was on the floor.”

Her husband did not get the number plate because he looked back after the bang and was more concerned about his wife.

She said: “I don’t remember coming off, but I do remember being in the air and then my body slamming into the floor.

“Thank goodness I was wearing gloves for the first time.”

Another driver stopped, but the one responsible sped away after the crash, on Colchester Road, at about 3.30pm, on Wednesday, August 19.

Mrs Roberts said: “I am disgusted someone could do this and couldn’t care less.

“Surely they have got family out there.

“They didn’t stop they just powered away.

“They knew they had done it and they didn’t care.

“I hope they are ashamed, but they probably won’t be.”

Mrs Roberts and her husband are keen cyclists and do about 70 miles a week.

She is determined this will not put her off – once the bike is fixed.

She added: “They must have come out of the village before they slammed me into the ground and powered off.”

Anyone with information about the crash should call Colchester Police, on 101.
