TAKEAWAY chain Domino’s Pizza is set to open a new branch in Stanway, creating 35 jobs.

The move is set to breathe life into the unit at Peartree Retail Park, Stanway, for the first time since it was completed eight years ago.

The whole unit was originally intended for retail use when the centre opened in 2007.

Domino’s has submitted a planning application to Colchester Council seeking change of use to selling hot takeaway food, for part of the unit. The site has Barnardo’s on one side, but the other side is also unoccupied.

If given the green light, the takeaway would be open from 10am to 11pm, seven days a week.

Domino’s Pizza’s nearest other outlet is in North Station Road, Colchester.

In the design and access statement included in the plans, Domino’s states: “The proposed change of use will make a positive addition to this part of the Urban District Centre given this part of the existing building is not in use and, therefore, forms underutilised floorspace. It will increase footfall and provide job opportunities for local residents.”

The retail park is owned by the East of England Co-op Supermarket, which also has a store there.

Paul Smith, leader of Colchester Council and its councillor responsible for strategy, welcomed the proposals.

He said: “We have had the downturn in the economy.

“This has been overhanging some of the properties, particularly outside of the town centre.

“We are now seeing developments starting to happen again, we are seeing growth coming back at Tollgate, north Colchester and in the town centre.

“We are expecting other planning applications in the near future.

“Things are now coming to fruition and we are seeing a rush of people wanting to come into Colchester.

“Good sites that have been on the market for a while will be disappearing and people don’t want to miss out.”

Nick Denny, executive officer for property at the East of England Co-op, said: “Two thirds of the space is occupied by national retailers Poundstretcher and Mattressman, and children’s charity Barnados.

“There is one unit of 7,600 sq ft left available, providing the perfect opportunity for a retailer to position themselves in a key location in Colchester on a site which is anchored by our successful supermarket.”

Colchester Council aims to decide on Domino’s planning application in August.
