THE Levellers, performing two days after the election result. Political? Er, yes.

Arriving early we caught a very energetic support set from duo Lockabilly.

These guys were great, one on bass, another on guitar, who took requests of rock ‘n’ roll favourites from the audience.

If they play local sometime soon again, I really recommend catching them if you can.

The mood of the soldout crowd, perhaps a little bit deflated following Thursday’s election result, made me wonder what the Levellers opening song would be.

And the band went right back to the start of their career, to 1989’s England You’re My Home. It fitted.

It really fitted. It was a rally to arms, a rock anthem about loving a country, which doesn’t love you back.

Like so much of the Levellers it was bittersweet. It celebrated the 25 years the band has been together, but it also underlined politically not much has changed.

But as lead singer Mark Chadwick implored the crowd, “get over it, it’s a done deal” and we did. We jumped up and down to such numbers as This Garden, Riverflow, Fifteen years and a host of other classics. The moshpit was just as manic as ever.
