THOUSANDS of youngsters are to take part in an action-packed event to teach them how to be aware of dangers and stay safe.

More than 2,000 youngsters in Year 6, at 60 Colchester schools, are set to take part in the Crucial Crew event at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

The event, which is funded and hosted by the Safer Colchester Partnership, will feature a number of interactive scenarios which will teach pupils fundamental safety and awareness skills.

Organisations taking part in the initiative include Essex Police who will advise on internet safety, Essex County Fire and Rescue and Essex Highways, who will talk about fire and road safety and Colchester Borough Homes who will talk about antisocial behaviour.

Anti-weapons charity, Only Cowards Carry, will speak to the youngsters about being aware of the dangers of knife crime, while representatives from Anglian Community Enterprise will speak about smoking while Alcohelp will give advice on alcohol awareness and legal highs.

Chief Insp Richard Phillibrown, Colchester’s district commander, said: “Crucial Crew is a fantastic opportunity for schoolchildren to engage and discuss a vast range of issues in a safe, open environment.

“The event also allows Essex Police and other community safety partners to build relationships with young people.”

The event runs from Monday, June 1 until Friday, June 12.
