THE former Sainsbury’s site in Stanway will be used as a temporary 170- space car park for shoppers.

Tollgate Partnership has agreed for the land to be used for parking for 27 weeks while work is carried out at the Tollgate Centre.

British Land, which owns the Tollgate Centre, is investing £6million to refurbish the retail park.

Duncan Reader, asset manager, said: “Our enhancement of the Tollgate Centre is a major project, which will make this an even better place to shop.

“In order to implement the changes, our car park will undergo a phased programme of works, during which it will be necessary to close small sections of the car park during each phase.

“The car park will remain operational throughout and any loss of spaces will be offset by the additional 170 spaces for shoppers we are preparing on the former Sainsbury’s site.

“British Land is grateful to Tollgate Partnership Limited for their generous co-operation and assistance to help deliver the project that will be of benefit to the entire Stanway area.”

Work will begin this month and is due to finish in October.

The temporary car park will not affect Tollgate Partnership’s plans to create a retail and leisure area at the former site.

Colchester Council will make a decision on the plans next month and, if approved, work could start next year.
