A FORMER police officer has been jailed for seven years for raping a girl more than three decades ago and trying to rape her sister.

Alexander McBride, 55, assaulted and abused the children at a house in Glasgow.

A judge told him at the High Court in Edinburgh: "You stand convicted of two sets of serious sexual crimes perpetrated against young sisters more than 30 years ago."

Temporary judge Roger Craik QC said the offences had left a "deep and distressing impression" on the victims.

McBride, of Norman Rise, Dedridge, Livingston, West Lothian, had denied the offences.

He began molesting one of the girls when she was aged four in 1968 and went on to rape her. He also attempted to rape her younger sister.

Defence solicitor advocate Jim Keegan QC said: "The accused is adamant he did not commit the offences of which he has now been convicted by the jury."

He said McBride suffered from a serious heart condition and other medical problems and took anti-depressants.

The defence lawyer said McBride had "served the community" and "shown good conduct" since the offences.

McBride was also placed on the Sex Offenders' Register.
