RESIDENTS in three Colchester parishes will pay less council tax next year.

Great Horkesley Parish Council slashed its precept by 47per cent, taking an almost £12,000 cut to help residents.

Little Horkesley residents enjoyed a 27 per cent cut and in Stanway it was reduced by ten per cent.

With Essex Police raising its part of the precept but Colchester Council, Essex County Council and the fire service freezing the rate it means some had a nice surprise.

At the other end of the sprectrum Wormingford Parish Council more than doubled its precept - raising it 116 per cent.

West Bergholt residents face a 24 per cent rise with 21 per cent in West Mersea.

It means the most expensive parish in Colchester is Wivenhoe.

The cheapest are Colchester, Layer Breton and Layer Marney where there are no parish councils.

The highest anyone will pay of £3,123.70.

The lowest is £983.70.

The average is about £1,500.

Essex County Council takes just under 74 per cent, Colchester Council just under 12 per cent, the police just under ten per cent and the fire service about 4.5 per cent.
