ESSEX MPs have chosen their favourite tourist locations within their constituencies as part of a scheme to promote English Tourism Week.

The event, which runs until Sunday, encourages residents to visit tourist spots across the country.

As part of the campaign, Colchester MP Sir Bob Russell was pictured beside Colchester Castle, while North Essex MP Bernard Jenkin chose to be photgraphed in Wivenhoe.

Conservative Colchester councillor, Sue Lissimore, who is vice-chairwoman of Visit Essex, was also asked to take part. She chose the Firstsite art gallery, in Colchester.

Current Braintree MP Brooks Newmark, who is not standing as a candidate in the next general election, opted for Hedingham Castle.

Visit Essex, the county’s tourism group, is also backing the campaign.

Its group chairman, George Kieffer, said: “Our objective is to promote tourism, increase visitor numbers and generate income for Essex tourism and hospitality businesses.

“A key aim is to improve awareness among Essex residents about what their county has to offer and the experiences they can enjoy on their doorstep, increasing their sense of civic pride.”

Other venues featured include Hadleigh Castle, Stow Maries Aerodrome, children’s play centre Partyman Lakeside and Chelmsford Cathedral.

A promotion, called Live Local, Love Local, has been launched alongside the campaign, which offers residents money-saving deals for attractions, accommodation and restaurants in the county.
