AUTHORITIES are letting down child victims of sex abuse, according to the Prime Minister.

David Cameron accused people in positions of responsibility of “walking on by”.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is currently carrying out six different investigations into Essex Police.

More than 40 cases involving more than 70 victims are being reviewed and re-investigated.

And now the actions, or lack of action, by teachers, councillors and social workers is under review with those who fail to protect children facing up to five years in jail.

Police forces have also been told to prioritise sexual exploitation as a “national threat”.

Police and Crime Commissioner Nick Alston said: “If child abuse is not top of our priorities what is?

“It is something the whole nation cares about.

“Supporting vulnerable people is extremely important and this includes supporting the vulnerable elderly which matters too.”

The change in status means child abuse will be treated as a high priority along with serious and organised crime.
