A KNIFE amnesty will be launched in Colchester.

More than a year ago an amnesty was agreed but no progress was made.

Now a date has been confirmed.

From Wednesday specially designed bins will be placed around the town.

The project is being supported by Essex Police, commissioner Nick Alston, Colchester Council and Only Cowards Carry.

A similar campaign will run in Tendring following a successful trial in the summer when 400 knives were handed in.

The bins, provided by the British Ironwork Centre for free, will enable the safe disposal of all bladed items handed in as part of the amnesty.
