A development of 138 homes looks set to be approved, despite fears it will blight a Colchester landmark.

Taylor Wimpey wants to demolish buildings at the former garrison headquarters, in Flagstaff Road, to build housing.

Objectors say the development will detract from the 15th-century St John’s Abbey Gate nearby.

Austin Baines, of Colchester Civic Society, said: “The visual impact on the historic view from the town will be even more oppressive than the current building.”

Colchester Council planning officers concluded the development would contribute positively towards the borough’s supply of housing.

They also highlighted the economic benefits of construction work, including job creation.

The council’s planning committee will rule on the application next Thursday.
