AN investigation will be held into the I Am Music fiasco.

The music festival, which was due to take place in July in Colchester Castle Park, was cancelled at the eleventh hour after council bosses could not be convinced proper health and safety measures were being taken by the organisers.

It left thousands of music and dance fans disappointed and out of pocket.

Now, the influential Colchester Council scrutiny committee has agreed to hold an investigation.

Beverley Davies, committee chair, said: “Something went wrong, but I do not think it was anything to do with the council.

“We will be looking at the whole policy of using Castle Park for events such as I Am Music, which clearly had a big effect on a lot of people.

“Castle Park is a great facility to hold events and we will be looking at how that could possibly be made better and hopefully avoid anything like this happening again.”

Part of the “scoping exercise” will be to look at whether health and safety checks could have been made by council bosses earlier, in order to give fans more notice of the cancellation.

Mrs Davies added: “I think it is important it is looked at.

“A lot of people were due to perform and I think that was probably where the main impact was.”

The organisers have begun refunding more than 5,000 tickets, some of which were bought for as much as £36.

The review, which was called for by Dominic Graham, borough councillor for Mile End, will be carried out by a working party, set up by the committee in October.
