WORKERS clearing out a home stumbled upon a Second World War grenade thought to be live.
Wartime chemicals were also found during the clean out in the garage of a house, in Pertwee Close, in Brightlingsea.
The area was sealed off by Essex Police while Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, based in Colchester Garrison, inspected the device, thought to be a Mills Grenade.
It was taken by specialists to nearby farm land, where a controlled explosion was carried out.
Firefighters were also called to the scene to inspect the chemicals, which were not leaking.
The drama unfolded at about 12.30pm on Friday after the workers discovered the device.
