A CCTV image has been released after a man stole a bike from an elderly pensioner.

80-year-old Michael Smith, of Prettygate Road, said: “I only nipped into the chemist to pick up a prescription.

“I parked it by the door and it was taken.

“I just want it back. It is a treasured friend I have had for 13 years.

“Maybe I shouldn’t be cycling at my age but I enjoy it and I am too old to get used to another bike.”

The bike was taken at about 3.40pm near Boots in Plume Avenue on August 7.

The Marin bike with a silver frame and mudguards, with a silver carrier on the back, front suspension, back and front lights, a mileage computer on the handlebars and the saddle is split on both sides.

The suspect was wearing a dark T-shirt, light coloured long shorts, dark trainers and a straw trilby type hat. He rode off in the direction of Plume Avenue.

Anyone who recognises the man who knows the current location of the bike is asked to contact PC Melanie Wilson at Colchester Police Station on 101.
